"Sparking Joy" with Decluttering
The Netflix show, Tidying up with Marie Kondo, has taken the world by storm, bringing a wave of high-value items with it.
According to Kondo’s website, the KonMari Method encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, miscellaneous items, and sentimental items.
Robin Searle, Chief Operating Officer of Kildonan MCC Thrift Shop, says that the shop’s retrieval area is packed with donations nearly every day.
“I do think that the increase in donations is in part because of Marie Kondo. We’re getting copious amounts of valuable donations year-round,” says Searle.

Jessica Seburn in her Childhood Home
Author Jessica Seburn knows a lot about decluttering, and has implemented the Marie Kondo method in her home.
“It’s a nice guide book for how you keep things in your life,” says Seburn.
Her best friend’s death makes decluttering a little more difficult, bringing the question of if those items “spark joy” closer into view.
“I think it’s definitely a hard decision – whether or not to get rid of something with sentimental value. Her items don’t necessarily “spark joy,” you know? But they’re still incredibly meaningful,” says Seburn.
Seburn is still working through getting rid of items she truly doesn’t need anymore, but says that there are things she’ll always be stuck on.
