See Spot Read
See Spot Read is a program from the Winnipeg Humane Society that allows kids to practice reading to service dogs. Students choose the books they want to read to the dogs and have help from the service dog owners if they're having trouble reading them. Dr. Ana Hanlon-Dearman says reading is a very engaging activity for the brain and that it's important for children's brain development. This is the tenth year the program has been running and has sessions at both the Winnipeg Humane Society and West Kildonan Library.
Dr. Ana Hanlon-Dearman poses with Bright Baby First Words, a book she uses to gauge a child’s brain development. Hanlon-Dearman says reading is a great activity for kids because it engages multiple parts of the brain.
